【Overview】Dongying is situated in the center of the Yellow River Delta. Established in 1983, Dongying exercises jurisdiction over two districts - Dongying District and Hekou District, and three counties - Guangrao, Kenli and Lijin. The city covers an area of 8243 square km, and is home to 2.04 million people. It borders Bohai Sea on the east, facing Japan and South Korea across the sea, faces Jing-Jin-Tang Economic Region in the north and Jiaodong Peninsula Economic Area in the south, and is connected to the vast hinterland in the west. Its advantageous location makes the city an important hub in the Bohai Sea Rim Economic Region, and a significant component in the Shandong Peninsula City Cluster.

【Culture】Dongying is a piece of ancient land with time-honored history and culture. The culture of this region can be traced back to the periods of the Dawenkou and Longshan Cultures more than 5000 years ago. The Fujia Relic Site in Dongying, where China’s earliest craniotomy was unearthed, is a typical example of the local sub-classification of North Shandong Dawenkou Culture. The salt making relic site of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties reveals that the land of Dongying was already inhabited by human beings more than 3000 years ago. Guangrao County in the south of Dongying was called Le’an in ancient times and was the hinterland of the State of Qi during the Spring and Autumn (770 B.C. - 476 B.C.) and the Warring States (475 B.C. - 221 B.C.) periods, and it is also the birthplace of Sunwu, a famous ancient Chinese military strategist. Within its territory, the Boqin Platform where Duke Huan of the Qi State established alliances with the other dukes has a history of more than 2600 years. Lijin County in north Dongying was established as a county during the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) and was a port for salt transport at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the early period of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). 

【Climate】Climate in Dongying falls to the category of Warm Temperate Continental Monsoon Climate, with cold winter and hot summer and four distinct seasons. The average temperature is 12.8℃ and the average annual precipitation amounts to 555.9 mm.

【Resources】Dongying boasts large expanse of land, rich resources and a unique eco-environment. The land area of the entire city extends to more than 800,000 hectares, with more than 300,000 hectares waiting to be reclaimed. Every year, 660-1300 hectares of new land is deposited by the Yellow River. Dongying also has abundant freshwater resources. Yellow River flows across Dongying for a distance of 138 km, producing an annual average runoff volume of 22.8 billion cubic meters. Reservoirs in Dongying have a combined water reserve capacity amounting to 831 million cubic meters. The city’s coastline stretches over 413 kilometers, and its tidal flats and shallow offshore shelf cover an area of 6000 square km, which provides home to diversified species of life. There are also rich resources of fish, shrimps, crabs, and shellfish in the coastal area. The rich reserves of geothermal energy and bittern produce a good development prospect for the city. Dongying is endowed with rich oil and gas resources and is the birthplace and main production area of Shengli Oilfield – the second largest petroleum industry base in China. At present, the oilfield’s verified reserve of petroleum hit 4.8 billion tons and the reserve of natural gas 230 billion cubic meters. 80 percent of the oilfield’s oil reserve and 85% of its oil and gas output are concentrated in the territory of Dongying.

【Transport】The city’s infrastructure is experiencing constant improvement. A three-dimensional transport network was established in the city, consisting of Dongqing Highway, Weiwu Highway, Huangda Railway, Delongyan Railway, Dongying Port, Guangli Port and Dongying Airport.

【Economy】Dongying adheres to the development orientation of high-efficiency & ecology and  keeps optimizing regional economic structure. Leading industries in the city include petroleum, petro-chemicals, salt chemicals, petroleum equipment manufacturing, textile and clothing, rubber tires, paper-making and timber processing, and food processing. Focused efforts were made to promote the development of emerging industries, including new energy, new materials, information technology, new medicine, pharmaceutical and biology industry. The year 2011 realized a total GDP of 268 billion yuan RMB, up by 13.7% and local fiscal revenue of 13.5 billion yuan RMB, up by 23%. The total export and import value amounted to $10.2 billion, up by 26.1%. In 2011, the per capita disposable income of urban residents reached 27,343 yuan RMB and the per capita net income of rural residents reached 10,025 yuan RMB. 

The construction of Yellow River Delta High-efficiency Eco-friendly Economic Zone and Shandong Peninsula Blue Economic Zone were successively incorporated into national development strategy. As the only city wholly included in the two national strategies, Dongying City is ushering in unprecedented historical opportunities. To meet the challenges in the implementation of the Yellow and Blue national strategies, the CPC Dongying Committee and Dongying Municipal Government formulated the new development objective of “constructing Dongying into an exemplar city for eco-civilization development featuring prosperous and advanced economy, beautiful and livable environment, civilized and harmonious society, and affluent and happy life”.
